  • Production occupations: 91,030 workers
  • Transportation and material moving: 100,340 workers

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania economy and careers

According to the BLS, the median wage for workers in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area was $19.05 per hour in May 2013. The U.S. Census Bureau reported a median household income of $37,016 in Philadelphia from 2008-2012 (Census.gov). As the BLS noted, professional and business services reported the greatest gain in employment in the Philadelphia area from February 2013 to February 2014, adding 7,400 jobs. During the same one-year time frame, the sector to add the second-highest amount of jobs in Philadelphia was leisure and hospitality, with 3,000 jobs added. Other industries seeing an uptick in employment were mining, logging, construction, education, and health services, notes the BLS.

The following are median hourly wages for some Philadelphia jobs in May of 2013, the BLS reports:

  • Carpenters: $22.77
  • Computer programmers: $36.85
  • Construction managers: $54.80
  • Dental assistants: $16.75
  • Industrial engineers: $41.59
  • Veterinary technologists and technicians: $17.66
