Tampa Vocational, Trade and Technical Schools

Thanks to its mild climate and seaside location, Tampa, Fla., has long been a center for trade, distribution, agriculture and tourism. Today, it is a bustling city with a large number of additional thriving industries -- health care, information technology, finance -- and is a hub for military and homeland security activities. Depending on your interests, you may wish to participate in a degree, certificate or diploma program in these or other fields. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov), in February 2014, the following sectors showed high numbers of employees in Tampa:

  • Education and health services: 189,100 jobs
  • Financial activities: 100,800 jobs
  • Leisure and hospitality: 129,600 jobs
  • Professional and business services: 205,600 jobs
  • Trade, transportation and utilities: 227,400 jobs

Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida's economy and career potential

The city of Tampa had roughly 348,000 residents in 2012, and the Metro Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area had nearly 2.8 million residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city is a popular tourist destination, which means that retail and food service are thriving job sectors. Professional and business services -- including, of course, information technology and data management -- also are growing, as are construction, aviation and health care, reports CareerSource Tampa Bay (workforcetampa.com). The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the 2008-2012 median household income in Tampa was $43,514, and the BLS cites the following median hourly wages for key Tampa jobs in May 2013:

  • Accountants and auditors at $28.20
  • Web developers at $27.48
  • Registered nurses at $29.43
  • First-line supervisors of retail sales workers at $18.63
  • Electricians at $17.45
  • Aircraft mechanics and service technicians at $23.63
