San Francisco Vocational, Trade and Technical Schools

Since the Gold Rush, people have gone to San Francisco to make their fortunes. With 837,442 residents in the city proper as of 2013, San Francisco is the fourth-largest city in California. However, it's only part of the much larger Bay Area, a collection of nine counties that were home to 7.15 million people in 2010, many of whom work in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose or other major cities in the area. Students enrolled in San Francisco vocational schools may find that the Bay Area's diverse economy provides numerous career opportunities for those who qualify.

According to the State of California Employment Development Department's Labor Market Information Division, industry sectors that experienced growth and high employment in San Francisco between May 2013 and May 2014 include:

  • Professional and business services: 9,800 new jobs
  • Leisure and hospitality: 4,200 new jobs
  • Construction: 3,400 new jobs
  • Private educational and health services: 2,800 new jobs
  • Trade, transportation, and utilities: 2,500 new jobs
  • Information: 1,900 new jobs

San Francisco economy and jobs information

Because of its high concentration of colleges and technical schools, San Francisco has the most highly educated workforce in the nation, with more than 7,000 college-degree-holders per square mile. This education is what has enabled the city to become an internationally known hub for research and innovation. San Francisco produces more patents than any other place in the country, and attracts more than one-third of its venture capital. Key sectors identified as important to the city's economic growth in the coming years are IT and software, social and digital media, life sciences and biotechnology, environmental and clean technology, professional services and international business. Here is a small sampling of jobs in these fast-growing sectors that San Francisco-Oakland-Freemont trade schools are poised to prepare students for, along with May 2013 annual mean salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.gov):
