These programs can teach you the basics of electrical theory and function while also preparing you for a new career. Some examples of careers you can start in this field include electrical and electronics engineering technicians, commercial and industrial equipment electrical and electronics repairers, and electronic equipment installers and repairers of motor vehicles. However, there are many other electronics careers to choose from within the manufacturing, production, and technology industries.

Electronics Specializations

Because the field of electronics is so wide and varied, many professionals in this industry choose to focus on a specialized skill. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists the following specializations as some of the most popular:

  • Electrical and electronics engineering technicians assist engineers as they design and develop a wide range of electrical products including computers, communications equipment, medical monitoring devices, and navigational equipment.
  • Commercial and industrial equipment electrical and electronics repairers perform repairs and routine maintenance on a wide array of electronics equipment.

Electronics Certifications and Degrees

Depending on which electronics career path you take, there are a number of educational options you can pursue. For example, the BLS reports that most electrical and electronics engineering technicians earn an associate's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology to get started. Meanwhile, most electrical or electronics installers and repairers complete training at vocational or technical schools. However, some of the most popular programs leading to a certificate of achievement instead of a degree and can often be completed in one year or less. Courses offered in these programs emphasize hands-on experience while also implementing classroom instruction on basic scientific principles, algebra, and trigonometry.

When it comes to certification, there are several options for electronics workers. For example, the BLS reports that the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification in electrical power testing is popular among electrical and electronics engineering technicians. The Electronics Technicians Association International and International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians also offer dozens of certifications that can prove competency in any electronics worker's area of focus. While certification is almost always voluntary, becoming certified might improve your job prospects and could possibly lead to higher pay.
