A special report by the Maine Department of Labor highlights the unique demand Maine is likely to have for healthcare workers in the future. Support functions such as medical assisting and healthcare administration are skyrocketing in demand, along with the more traditional roles of doctor and nurse. The report recommends an educational and recruiting emphasis to help meet this demand.
Healthcare Job Market Characteristics in Maine
According to the report, the healthcare job market in Maine consists of some 75,000 jobs, generating over $2.7 billion in annual payroll. This includes jobs in management, nursing, and medical assisting. This makes healthcare Maine's biggest employer, and experts predict increasing demand for healthcare services. Maine's population is aging faster than the national average--by population, it's the oldest state in the country. Add that to the nationwide aging of the baby boomers, and you've got a recipe for an enormous healthcare industry.
Educational Opportunities
If you're not quite ready for medical school, you can consider many other fields in the healthcare system.
